Is Endometroisis Life Threatening? When To Consider Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

An Overview Of Endometriosis

The endometrium is the lining of a woman’s uterus. Endometriosis is a gynecological condition where the endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus, such as in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and abdomen. This abnormality results in painful abdominal cramps and bleeding. If treated, endometriosis does not put a woman’s life in danger.

The agonizing symptoms

Many women with endometriosis experience various kinds of symptoms at different intensity levels. However, extreme menstrual cramps are a common symptom. Women may also experience pain during intercourse, urination, and bowel movements. A woman may have irregular periods or heavy menses. Other possible symptoms of endometriosis include infertility, low energy, constipation, and diarrhea.

Is the condition life-threatening?

The gynecological condition is not life-threatening, but if left untreated, possible complications such as chronic pain, ovarian cysts, infertility, and bladder issues can arise. In very rare cases, some endometriosis complications may put a woman’s life at risk.

Addressing aggravating symptoms

Endometriosis can be managed conservatively or surgically based on the patient’s symptoms and other factors. Some women may prefer a natural approach to endometriosis involving vitamins, herbals, acupuncture, or chiropractic treatments. Other women are treated with pain medications and hormone therapy. If planning to get pregnant, the doctor will not recommend hormone therapy as this affects the ability to conceive. In more extreme cases where the pain is debilitating, the healthcare provider may recommend surgery such as laparoscopy, laparotomy, and hysterectomy.

Reasons for surgery

The healthcare provider may recommend surgery for endometriosis after considering the patient’s age, symptoms, overall health, and desire to have children. Endometriosis surgery is suggested in some patients with unbearable pelvic pain or difficulty getting pregnant. The presence of abnormal growth in the pelvic area may also require surgery. Additionally, women who do not get symptomatic relief from conservative treatments may need surgical intervention.

When to consider laparoscopic hysterectomy

In this surgery, the doctor will make small incisions and introduce a tube and tools through the incisions to perform the surgery. The doctor will then remove the uterus, a process called a hysterectomy. Laparoscopic hysterectomy is for women who have persistent endometriosis symptoms and do not wish to have any future children.

Living with endometriosis

The good news is endometriosis is not a life-threatening condition and can be treated. A laparoscopic hysterectomy is an option to treat the condition, but other women may get relief from medication. If endometriosis is not treated, the condition can worsen, and complications may arise.
